There is certainly an old-world charm resonating around Shaldon. From the bygone smugglers to the 200 year old annual regatta and Britain's oldest passenger ferry, the village is teeming with history. Secret Smugglers Coves The little red sandy beach below is perfect for a morning stroll, but venture a little further and you'll discover the secluded, unspoilt beach of Ness Cove through an original Smugglers tunnel. Foodie Heaven In recent years Shaldon has become a haven for fine food. As well as the local producers (the village has a bakery, butchers and ice cream/fudge parlour) there is a good variety of seafood restaurants, coffee shops and quaint tea rooms on offer too - some of which have been mentioned in the Michelin Guide. Watersports If you like to pepper your holiday with some action, then you have come to the right place. You can SCUBA dive, windsurf, canoe around some of the lovliest cliffs in the UK. For a full adrenalin rush, try coasteering at Maidencombe smugglers cove. Dartmoor Don't forget your walking boots on a break here, head out for breathtaking wilderness rambles on Dartmoor. This National Park offers a dramatic wilderness in which to mountain bike, kayak, rock climb and hike - a playground for adventure. Nearest Beaches Shaldon Beach is just two minutes walk away, whilst Ness Cove is five minutes walk away, accessed via the smugglers tunnel! I'm sure we all want to be beside the seaside. And there are not many places that tick all the boxes for a relaxing escape that really is right next to the sea. Shaldon is blessed with centuries of seafaring history, pubs that have welcomed the salty sea-dogs are now cosy nooks for you and your friends to relax and soak up the atmosphere. Restaurants, bars and galleris are aplenty as you wander along the shore with the waves gently lapping at your feet. And if you like to beachcombe, each new tide will deliver all sorts of treats for those with sharp eyes for gathering the harvest. Across the river into teignmouth will increase the tempo slightly, with cinema, theatre, shopping and even more beaches. If you are detemined not to relax, then boat hire, scuba diving, wind surfing, and all manner of sea related fun is right there for the taking.
