Why Caen is such an appealing destination
Caen sits in the heart of Normandy and brings together culture, history and nature. The Château de Caen, once built by William the Conqueror, is one of Europe’s largest medieval castles and offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past. The impressive abbeys, Abbaye aux Hommes and Abbaye aux Dames, are also well worth a visit.
Caen is also known as a great base for exploring the D-Day beaches, including iconic sites such as Omaha Beach and Sword Beach, where Allied forces landed in 1944. If you’re interested in history, the Mémorial de Caen is a must: a museum and memorial that provides a powerful overview of the Second World War and the Cold War.
At the same time, Caen is a lively French city in its own right. You’ll find atmospheric cafés, boutiques, local markets and a vibrant nightlife. In summer, it’s a pleasure to stroll along the River Orne or settle down at a terrace on one of the city’s welcoming squares.
