Popular excursions include the ruins of Regenstein Castle near Blankenburg, the Rappbodetalsperre, the historic mines of Elbingerode, the fairytale Schloss Wernigerode, the Kyffhäuser monument and, of course, the Brocken - the highest mountain in northern Germany. Running directly past the house is the famous Hexenstieg, a 60-kilometre-long cycling and hiking trail stretching from the Brocken to Thale
