The symbol par excellence of Galician lay society, of the "lords of the land" and of their noble status, until well into the 19th century, was the pazo, an austere and sober building attached to a tower. Among the various adjectival outbuildings of the pazo, which make up a typically Galician architectural ensemble, is the Casa Romeo, a dwelling designed to house the family that looked after the lord's estate, who did not usually live in the countryside.
