Its origin is linked to the repopulation of the reconquered lands at the beginning of the 16th century. The distribution of the land around 1520 by the family of the Duchy of Arcos, the Ponce de León, all of these events mark the origin of the town of Algodonales. The great fertility and the large amount of water that the land has attracted neighbours from Zahara de la Sierra, to settle in the fertile plain that extends to the foot of the Sierra de Líjar. The heroic behaviour of the town's defenders against the Napoleonic army was the argument used to demand the segregation of the parent entity Zahara de la Sierra. In 1817, King Ferdinand VII granted Algodonales the title of town and its own municipality of 23,000 fanegas, at which point it became definitively independent from Zahara de la Sierra.
