In 1229 Wernigerode was awarded the town charter and it has preserved its historical flair up until today. You can stroll along romantic alleys and discover medieval architectural monuments. A must for every visitor is the market square, which owes its fascination in particular to the late Gothic timber-framed town hall. The Wernigerode Castle, one of the landmarks of the town, houses one of the largest museums of the Sacsen-Anhalt region.
