The pre-war west chapel was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. The sea dike was bombed by the Allies in October 1944 to liberate Walcheren. The resulting bomb hole in the dike gave the sea free rein in the village, which among other things led to the creation of the large lake behind the Westkapelle.
